It's a wonderful world

My current 'kitchen table laptop' desktop wallpaper (courtesy Vladstudio), which I'd assumed for months was imaginary.....but I was so wrong! Check out what you can find growing on the island of Socotra here at Dark Roasted Blend

Pretty Polly

Edward Lear was better known for his 'Owl and the Pussycat' genre of nonsense rhymes....well, I certainly didn't know he was a talented illustrator anyway. The above from an interesting post about his life and work(with links to lots more large scans) over at BibliOdysey
But if you're just up for nonsense, click through his book of the same here (Hint: click on the images to enlarge)

Here's one for Anne and John.....

Snarling beast

I thought I'd start posting an occasional image of some local stone beasts I've come across recently. This snarling delight lives on Neville Hall (home of The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, Westgate Rd, Newcastle....next door to the Lit and Phil)....he's rather splendid, don't you think?

Graffiti Creator

Someone asked me to plaster a picture of a local beauty spot with mock graffiti today (don't ask!)....and not being that way artistically inclined I had to find something to aid the design process. Luckily I came across Graffiti Creator a while ago. Now it doesn't have a 'save' option, only 'print', but there's 2 workarounds if you want to use your tag as an image...
1 If you have a 'virtual' pdf printer installed just print to that, many image editing programmes are capable of opening pdfs where you can tidy the image up
2 That ever-useful PrtSc (Print Screen) key at the top of your keyboard works wonders too.

Little Nemo in the Land of Wonderful Dreams

High resolution scans of this wonderful (literally) Winsor McCay comic strip from the early years of the 20th Century....there's no less than 376 of them at The Comic Strip Library

And here's a repost of McCay's 1911 (1911!!) animation of some of the characters. If I remember correctly, the individual frames were hand painted on rice paper.

Who do Hoodoo?

I remember telling Sarah about this collection of scans from The King Novelty Co "Curio Catalog No 81" at I'm Learning To Share ages ago, but I don't think I posted about it.....time to put that right!

Some Pre-Raphaelite eyecandy

Sort of how I feel.....but definitely not how I look, I've just cleaned out the fridge (so you'll just have to mentally superimpose primeval green splashes from the cucumber melt-down on that grecian gown!) John William Godward gallery at the GalleryofArt.us

It's a small world

Check out the Nikon Small World gallery page for microscopic photographic delights

Watch out Bella....you'll have that pot over if you're not careful!

I went to the Laing Art Gallery (Newcastle) a couple of weeks ago to see a couple of temporary exhibitions. Included in "Love" (ended yesterday, 13th July) is Isabella and the Pot of Basil by Holman Hunt which is part of the Laing's permanent collection....she's off on-tour until later in the year, glad I caught her before she went! Actually, it's not so much Isabella, more the embroidered orange cloth underneath the pot that makes me want to reach out and touch. Bon voyage!

Art Deco

Lots to feast your eyes upon at Artophile (high quality scans when you click on the thumbnails, check the width and feel the quality by clicking on the image above)
